Dr William Sears

Dr. Sears is one of Australia’s leading Spinal Surgeons and a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS). With decades of experience and his own patient measured and reported clinical outcomes, he has made significant national and international contributions to the field of spinal surgery.

Dr. Sears completed his medical degree at the University of Sydney and the Sydney Hospital Clinical School. He began his medical career with an internship at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney, followed by general surgical training at Guy’s Hospital in London. His journey in neurosurgery began with training at the Maudsley Hospital in London, followed by the Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney, and a 12-month neurotrauma fellowship in Toronto, Canada. In 1987, he earned his fellowship from the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.

In 1988, Dr. Sears was appointed as a staff specialist Neurosurgeon at the Royal North Shore Hospital, where he became a Visiting Medical Officer in 1991. In 1997, he became one of Australia’s first neurosurgeons to specialise exclusively in spinal disorders. He served as neurosurgeon to the RNSH Spinal Cord Injuries Unit for 20 years across two terms: from 1988 to 2000, and again from 2006 to 2014.

Dr. Sears has been engaged in clinical spinal biomechanics research, with a focus on degenerative spinal disorders. In 1993, he established a prospective surgical outcomes database that now includes self-reported clinical outcome data from over 5,000 patients. His research has resulted in 32 peer-reviewed publications, over 150 invited and peer-reviewed presentations at scientific meetings worldwide, and several prestigious awards for his work.

Dr. Sears has co-designed spinal surgical implants and holds 14 U.S. patents as a named inventor. His leadership roles have included serving as Presidents of the Spine Society of Australia, the Asia-Pacific Cervical Spine Society, and the NSW Neurosurgical Association.

Beyond his surgical practice, Dr. Sears is a co-founder of Wyvern Private Hospital, located on the Northern Beaches of Sydney in Terrey Hills, and the Chairman of Wyvern Health Ltd.
